Highbridge Park is 119 acres of trees, pathways and glades overlooking the Harlem River. Though one of the largest parks in the city, it had been virtually abandoned for almost 30 years until New York Restoration Project stepped in to rescue it.
New York Restoration Project crews and volunteers, in partnership with the City of New York Department of Parks & Recreation, uncovered more than four miles of pathways buried in garbage and debris. We removed hundreds of tons of abandoned automobiles and other trash, including 8,000 tires! Then we instituted an ongoing maintenance program to keep the park safe and clean.
The area includes the High Bridge, New York City’s oldest standing bridge (built in 1842 as part of the Croton Aqueduct system of bringing the first clean water into the city), and the parks on the Bronx and Manhattan side of it. The City is completing a $700,000 project to improve paths in Highbridge Park, and investing requirements funds in both Highbridge Parks to make additional improvements.
