East Harlem has a history of activism dating back to at least 1885, when Irish tenement dwellers agitated for rent reductions. Join Activist New York contributing curator Kathleen Benson for a tour of sites associated with political, cultural, educational, and health advocacy by the neighborhood’s citizens over the decades. The program will start at the Museum and head towards Lexington Avenue and 112 th Street; it will feature the Young Women’s Leadership School , the Julie de Burgos Cultural Center , and the First Spanish Methodist Church (renamed the People’s Church by the Young Lords Party when the group occupied it for 11 days in December 1969). Presented in conjunction with Activist New York . Tour participants are welcome to visit the exhibition prior to the walk.
