Craig Harris is an acclaimed jazz trombonist, composer, bandleader, and multidisciplinary artist whose work bridges avant-garde jazz, African diasporic traditions, performance, and social commentary. Emerging in the 1970s, Harris first gained recognition performing with pioneering artists including Sun Ra and later collaborated with influential musicians such as Abdullah Ibrahim, Lester Bowie, and Cecil Taylor.

Known for expanding the role of the trombone beyond traditional jazz performance, Harris has created large-scale musical works that explore Black history, culture, and community through sound and storytelling. His original productions—including God’s Trombones, Souls Within the Veil, and TriHarlenium—reflect a long-standing commitment to using music as a vehicle for cultural expression and public engagement.

Deeply connected to Harlem’s artistic life, Harris is also recognized as a curator, educator, and community arts advocate whose performances and collaborative projects continue to celebrate the neighborhood’s creative legacy while advancing contemporary jazz practice.
