Winard Harper is an acclaimed American jazz drummer, percussionist, composer, educator, and bandleader known for his dynamic swing style and his ability to blend hard bop traditions with African and global rhythmic influences. Born in Baltimore in 1962 and raised in the Washington, D.C. area, Harper began performing at a very young age and emerged as part of the generation of jazz artists who helped carry forward the tradition of acoustic jazz in the 1980s and beyond. 

Harper gained early recognition performing with jazz legends including Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, and spending four formative years with vocalist Betty Carter. He later co-founded The Harper Brothers with his brother, trumpeter Philip Harper, before establishing himself as a respected solo artist and leader of ensembles including the Winard Harper Sextet and Jeli Posse. 

Recognized for both performance and mentorship, Harper has toured internationally, recorded extensively as a leader and collaborator, and remained committed to jazz education and community engagement. His work reflects a deep respect for jazz’s roots while embracing cross-cultural musical traditions and contemporary expression.
