We are delighted to announce the opening of our new exhibition, Sandy Rodriguez: Tierra Insurgente, the first New York City solo exhibition by Chicana artist Sandy Rodriguez. Grounded in Indigenous Mesoamerican traditions of mapping, healing, and storytelling, Rodriguez’s work challenges the assumption that visualizing space is a neutral act. References to contemporary issues, from pandemic-era grief to the ravages of climate change, play across large-scale maps and paintings created on handmade amate bark paper using natural pigments. Placing Rodriguez’s work in dialogue with rarely exhibited examples of colonial-era cartography, allegories of the Americas, botanical books, and Indigenous manuscripts from the Hispanic Society’s historic collection, the exhibition traces a history of conquest and resilience that continues to unfold in the present day. Stay tuned for more information about programming related to this exhibition.
