This community event will feature quiet reading time (bring a book by any writer of the Harlem Renaissance to sit and read silently for an hour). Reading will be followed by scholarly presentations and music for a broad community celebration.
In March 1924 the Civic Club hosted an interracial working dinner which created significant opportunity for burgeoning Black writers to connect with patrons, publishers, and colleagues. The event is acknowledged as a birth point of the Harlem Renaissance movement. For the first time, the specific dinner location of 14 West 12th Street (a building replaced by First Church's Mellin Macnab building in the 1950s) is to be recognized.
The program will feature:
Dr. David Levering Lewis, two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, "Biography of W.E.B. DuBois, Volumes 1 and 2" and author of "When Harlem Was in Vogue"
Dr. Monica L. Miller, Chair, Africana Studies, Barnard College, Author, "Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity"
Dr. Jeffrey C. Stewart, Pulitzer Prize winner, "The New Negro: The Life of Alain Locke"
Musicians: Joy F. Brown and Brandie Sutton
