Launch of Fiscal Sponsorship program at Maysles Documentary Center
Posted October 27, 2021

Maysles Documentary Center (MDC) is pleased to announce the launch of its Fiscal Sponsorship program today, October 27, 2021. As part of the organization’s mission to foster community, education, and documentary filmmaking, the program will extend some of the benefits of MDC’s 501(c)(3) non-profit status to help projects expand their fundraising potential.
MDC’s Fiscal Sponsorship program was developed in furtherance of Albert Maysles’ vision of creating social conscious documentary films and mentoring artists at all levels of experience. He was a strong advocate for discovery-based filmmaking, social justice, and artistic independence. The program puts these values into action by using the organization’s institutional resources to support independent projects.
The program will enable artists to seek grants and funds from foundations and corporations that support non-profit organizations and accept tax-deductible contributions from donors. In addition to receiving access to discounted space rental and non-profit rates for certain services, accepted projects also become associated with the Maysles name and what it has come to represent over decades in the industry.
Artists can access the application, FAQ, and handbook through the Fiscal Sponsorship page on MDC’s website. Though the organization is rooted in the documentary tradition, the program will sponsor projects of all types—including narratives, experimental films, film festivals, series, installations, collectives, and preservation projects—that fall within the scope of its mission.
Applications for MDC’s program are free of charge, and new filmmakers are encouraged to apply. Though most of the relevant materials will be available through the Fiscal Sponsorship portal online, MDC staff are on hand to provide support and guide sponsees through the policies and procedures. The organization will work closely with projects at various stages of development to completion.
