" Merciful Father " Atar Hadar's Adaptation of Sholem Asch's Yiddish Play Opens Uptown

Atar Hadari’s “Merciful Father” provides a stimulating version of Sholem Asch’s Yiddish play God of Vengeance which emphasizes the outlook of religion and illustrates the intensity of pure love.

Merciful Father is about a brothel owner who commissions the creation of a Torah scroll to win a respectable husband for his daughter Rachel (Lauren Capkanis). Rachel’s father, Harry (Bill Christ) attempts to redeem his tarnished un-pure image by marrying his pure daughter in the name of God, in order to purify his own soul. However Rachel disobeys her father and runs off with her one and only true love Manke (Nikole Williams), one of her father’s workers. Rachel and Manke’s lesbian relationship stirs up confrontation leading to Rachel’s death.

Right from your seat, Merciful Father takes you on a spiritual passage that will influence you to question the position of your own faith.

James Bosley, director of Merciful Father does an impeccable job of setting a melodramatic tone to this play. This play is meant for you to analyze your emotions, to analyze your belief in God, and to evaluate your own actions.

Bosley professed the end goal of what he wants his audience to take away from the play.  “ To think about God and what role he plays in your life, whether you deny him or not. If there is a God he is going to have way with you one way or another. I want people to wonder that their actions have consequences. And if there's a God up there how does he responds to you and your acts.”
