ZORA! Returns Home to Harlem
Step into the Harlem Renaissance with ZORA!, the acclaimed one-woman play celebrating the extraordinary life of literary icon Zora Neale Hurston.
Nearly a century ago, Zora Neale Hurston and Langston Hughes walked through the doors of Harlem's historic 135th Street Library—today's Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture—where they researched, wrote, and helped shape one of the greatest cultural movements in American history. On October 29, Zora's story returns to the very place where history happened.
Presented by Executive Producer Caroline Schimmel, whose visionary leadership brought ZORA! to sold-out audiences at Penn Live Arts' Annenberg Center at the University of Pennsylvania and Off-Broadway at the American Theater of Actors, this special Schomburg engagement continues the production's celebrated journey.
Written by multi-AUDELCO Award-winning playwright Laurence Holder, directed by Greg Freelon, and starring NY NAACP Women in the Arts Award recipient Antonia Badón, ZORA! brings Hurston's remarkable journey to life through 19 unforgettable character portrayals, authentic voices, period costumes, and the vibrant music of the Harlem Renaissance.
Travel from Eatonville, Florida, to the heart of Harlem as Zora pursues her dreams with only $1.50 in her purse, becoming Barnard College's first Black student, an acclaimed anthropologist, folklorist, and author of Their Eyes Were Watching God. Along the way, audiences encounter the legendary figures who transformed American literature, music, and culture.
More than a play, ZORA! is a celebration of courage, cultural consciousness, and the enduring power of storytelling—performed in the very institution where Zora and Langston once found inspiration.
Experience history where history was made. Witness the woman. Experience the Renaissance. Meet the legend behind the legacy.
