The Foundation
According to Peter G. Davis in his book, "The American Singer", a major problem with contemporary classical singers is a blandness in style. Insights into an operatic role to include the background of the drama, the historical perspective, and the psychological motivations of each character are not provided in the institutions of classical music training in America.
Martina Arroyo, lyrico-spinto soprano, who has performed in the major opera houses of the world, perceived this issue and established a 14 week course in operatic role preparation at the Indiana University School of Music, where she holds the position of Distinguished Professor. She wanted to provide a similar course to young opera singers in the New York area, and as a result, Ms. Arroyo privately established this course in New York City in September of 2002.
