Founded in 1986, GALLERY M since 2000 has been a leading force in Harlem for the representation of exceptional contemporary established and emerging artists. Previous exhibitions have included works by AA Bronson, John Bankston, Larry Clark, Ellen Gallagher, David Hammons, Adrian Piper, Howardena Pindell, Malick Sidibe, Kara Walker, Andy Warhol and Carrie Mae Weems. Publications in which the gallery has been mentioned include Art in America, Esquire (Japanese edition), The New York Times, Time Out New York, Vanity Fair and the Village Voice. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of works in the exhibition go to fund for self-help program at GALLERY M, a wholly owned strategic business unit of Weston United.It is a non-profit social services organization serving the Harlem Community since 1985, providing supportive residential and innovative rehabilitation services to those struggling to overcome homelessness, substance abuse and serious mental illness. GALLERY M provides the consumers of Weston United the therapeutic benefits of paid employment experience in an art gallery setting.
GALLERY M is a contemporary fine arts gallery that shows art by emerging, established, and outsider artists. The gallery focuses on presenting work by African American, Latino, and mentally ill artists.
Consumers visit art galleries and museums around New York City and are offered therapeutic art classes. Additionally, consumers are employed as Gallery Assistants and learn vocational skills while at the gallery.
The Gallery also conducts free talks with the general public and school groups. In addition, the gallery has an ongoing series entitled; Art in Context ; which is free and is centered around current shows on view in the gallery, such as Black Contemporary Performance Art and "The Printmaking Process".
