BOYS DON'T CRY: GROWING PAINS, curated by Haitian-American curator Yvena Despagne, explores the experiences of raising Black boys in today's world through contemporary art. The exhibition examines both challenges and joys of Black childhood, highlighting the complex balance between preserving cultural heritage and navigating modern society. The show features eleven artists working across multiple mediums - including tapestry, sculpture, mixed media, painting, photography, film, and conceptual works. A site-specific installation "TV Dad" by Richard Rameau adds to the exhibition's exploration of Black boyhood and family experiences. The exhibition includes a robust series of programs:
Exhibition: January 25 - March 15, 2025
- Opening Reception: January 25, 2025, 6-9PM
- Gallery Tours with curator and featured artists (Feb 8 & 15)
- Film Screening of "NWA" by Hans Augustave (Feb 8)
- "Let Them Be Kids" Artist Talk (Feb 15)
- "Hueman Fathers" Workshop (March 8) The exhibition aims to spark dialogue about emotional and cultural dynamics that shape Black children's lives, particularly in urban settings, inviting viewers to consider how race, identity, and culture intersect in a child's journey.
