Today, children and families visiting this area''which surrounds the Little Red Lighthouse, one of New York City's hidden treasures''can enjoy playing and picnicking along a pristine waterfront. NYRP's AmeriCorps crew and field staff help the City of New York Department of Parks & Recreation to maintain Fort Washington Park by conducting daily litter patrol and repairing benches and lighting fixtures.
Each fall, NYRP cosponsors the annual Little Red Lighthouse Festival with the Historic House Trust of New York City. Festival activities include lighthouse tours, hayrides, and a special reading of Hildegarde Swift's children's classic, The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge. Notable guest readers have included singer/songwriter Roseanne Cash, and award-winning actresses Marcia Gay Harden and Cynthia Nixon
