"Harlem's Own Chamber Music Series"
The Harlem Chamber Players is an ethnically diverse collective of professional musicians dedicated to bringing high caliber, affordable and accessible live classical chamber music to the people of Harlem.
The "Music at St. Mary's" chamber music series at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church on 126th Street brings the great works of the chamber music repertoire uptown to those in the community who love classical music as well as to those who might like to be exposed to and enjoy live classical chamber music for the first time. The Harlem Chamber Players add to the rich cultural landscape of Harlem, which includes jazz, dance, theater, literature, the visual arts, contemporary pop culture and so much more. Their mission is to make great music accessible and affordable in a variety of unique and intimate urban settings—whether it be in churches, schools, libraries or other public and private venues.
The Harlem Chamber Players seek to build an audience for classical music in general through community and educational outreach, as well as through collaborations with Harlem's other arts organizations, schools and cultural institutions, including Opus 118, The Harbor Conservatory of Music, Harlem Opera Theatre, Harlem Children’s Zone and the Harlem School of the Arts. By presenting memorable concerts for their audiences and by engaging in educational outreach activities in schools and other venues, they hope to reach a diverse audience, young and old, who will hopefully become engaged in and be inspired by this enriching and uplifting musical art form.
Encouraged and supported by Janet Wolfe, founder of the New York City Housing Authority Symphony Orchestra and long-time patron of minority classical musicians, the “Music at St. Mary’s” with The Harlem Chamber Players has been called ”a series of which we can be proud” by The New York Amsterdam News. They hope to sustain this sense of pride by hosting a regular high quality, multi-ethnic chamber music series right here in Harlem.
