The Children’s Art Carnival (CAC), a pillar of artistic excellence in Harlem, proudly celebrates Black History Month with the announcement of Making Thoughts Become—A Love Letter to Betty, an exhibition honoring the enduring legacy of its founder, the late Betty Blayton-Taylor. This special tribute comes on the heels of CAC receiving the prestigious Ruth Arts Foundation Grant, reinforcing its commitment to fostering creativity, cultural equity, and artistic expression in the Harlem community and beyond.

Blayton-Taylor, a visionary artist, educator, and arts advocate, founded CAC to nurture young minds through art. In 1978, she self-published Making Thoughts Become, a groundbreaking handbook dedicated to “all the children who have or will attend the Children’s Art Carnival – with the hope that they will all become creative, productive and balanced adults.” This upcoming exhibition brings her words to life, showcasing archival works created by CAC students throughout its 40-plus-year history, interwoven with Blayton-Taylor’s inspirational quotes, transformed into visual art.

“This exhibition is a testament to the power of Betty Blayton-Taylor’s vision, which continues to shape young artists and uplift the Harlem community,” said Michael Unthank, CAC Board Co-Chair. “Her dream was to create an institution that amplified Black excellence and artistry, and these programs embody her mission.” In honor of Blayton-Taylor’s profound impact, past CAC students will attend the opening reception and share their experiences and insights during a special panel discussion.

Beyond the exhibition, CAC’s programming continues to enrich Harlem’s cultural landscape year-round. The organization has been widely recognized for its dedication to arts, students and the community, with features on WNBC, WCBS, PIX11, BronxNet, WABC Here and Now, Yahoo News, NY Beacon, Harlem News, and more.
