Above Ground provides a rare insight into the underground graffiti scene, capturing the moment when artists moved from the streets to gallery spaces, showcasing the intense energy and passion that fueled this dynamic art form.
The exhibition features dozens of works from the Museum's extensive collection of graffiti art, donated by artist Martin Wong 30 years ago, with pieces by legendary artists like Rammellzee, Lee Quiñones, Lady Pink, Keith Haring, and Futura 2000. These works represent a pivotal moment in the movement's evolution, marking its transition into mainstream awareness and its lasting impact on global culture.
Lead support for Above Ground: Art from the Martin Wong Graffiti Collection is provided by UNIQLO USA, with additional support by Elizabeth Belfer. Support for this exhibition is made possible by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the New York City Council.
