BREAK Juicery - The Science of Health Opens on Edgecombe & 141st Street!
Posted June 30, 2018
This endless euphoria around juices and smoothies has, in turn, created a backlash from the medical community. Science vs. the “woo” merchants; the people making billions of dollars off our confusion and desperation. To Kale, or not to Kale? That is the question.
But the body cleans itself, the doctors cry. That’s what our bodies do, not the juices!
Which is, of course, correct. It is our bodies—our livers and our kidneys specifically—that clean our systems of toxins, so why do so many people still stand-by their juices and smoothies almost religiously? What is the truth that people like Bill Clinton and Beyonce swear by? Is there something else at work that the medical community and skeptics aren’t taking into consideration?
To answer that key question, we first need to understand how a juice cleanse works. The doctors are right. It isn’t the juice that cleans the body. It is giving the body a break from the inflammation, irritation and overload of salts, chemicals, preservatives and all of the thousands of other unknown additives jam-packed into our daily “fast” food meals that cleans the body.
It is giving the body a break from today’s toxins, so that it can completely break down yesterday’s toxins, but it can’t do a complete job of it if every two or three hours we keep shoving saturated fats and complex carbohydrates and a dozen different corn syrups into our already over-taxed systems.
Ask yourself, if you wake up every morning and eat an egg, bacon and cheese sandwich, stop by a fast food restaurant for lunch and follow that up with a huge dinner of meat and potatoes —and in between those meals you’re snacking on chips or candy bars (or even “healthy” snacks like raisins or nuts) and washing those down with sugary sodas to keep the hunger at bay – when exactly does your body have time to fully process all of the harmful ingredients in every bite or sip? Tomorrow, when it starts all over again? The weekend, when you double-down on the desserts late at night because you “deserve a little treat” after the week you’ve just had?
Now imagine instead of slowing yourself down with all of that fat and carbohydrates and salt, you replaced just one of those unhealthy meals with a light, refreshing and delicious fruit smoothie— full of banana, blueberries, raspberries and mango — or fresh-pressed juice combination, like apples, ginger and carrot juice.
Instead of slowing you down and making you even more tired, it allows your mind to focus and stay sharp and your body to continue processing the toxins -- and burning the calories -- from the day before, without competition from that day’s routine additions.
You feel better, because you are better. All with just one simple change to your daily routine.
And that is the reason why juices and smoothies in particular, work so well to help “clean” and “detox” the body. They give our bodies the pure, simple, natural nutrients they need to take just a small break every day from the stress-filled lives we don’t always know we’re living and the toxin-filled foods we don’t always know we’re eating, so that our bodies can operate at peak performance.
