The Studio Museum in Harlem’s Annual Spring Luncheon Honors Elaine Welteroth, Raises Over $375,000 For Museum’s Education And Public Programs

On Friday, April 27, The Studio Museum in Harlem welcomed more than 400 artists, philanthropists, and cultural, civic and business leaders to the Mandarin Oriental, New York for its annual Spring Luncheon, which supports the Museum’s interdisciplinary and multidimensional education programs. The event honored journalist and editor Elaine Welteroth, and was attended by notable guests including First Lady of New York City Chirlane McCray, Mayoral Designee to our Board of Trustees Roxane John, philanthropists Agnes Gund, Laurie Tisch and Marie-Josée Kravis, artists Julie Mehretu, Lorna Simpson, Firelei Báez and Maren Hassinger, journalist Deborah Roberts, and supermodel, actress and writer Veronica Webb.
Thelma Golden, Director and Chief Curator of the Studio Museum, welcomed the guests and spoke about Elaine Welteroth’s role as an advocate for women and young people. She also described the vital impact of the Museum’s educational programs and the impending groundbreaking later this year for the Studio Museum’s new home, designed by Sir David Adjaye of Adjaye Associates with Cooper Robertson. Following Golden’s remarks, Khadija Savané, a student from the Museum’s signature teen program Expanding the Walls, gave a moving speech about her experience.
